It took us, in cooperation with Generali Česká pojišťovna and RedButton EDU, just two months to create an interactive digital tool that evaluates and improves employees’ digital skills. This tool uses gamification and storytelling and is available to all 5 400 employees in the Czech Republic and Slovakia – out of which 92 % have already completed it. This tool alone led to approximately 20% increase in use of already used tools such as Teams or One Drive. How did that happen?
In the digital transformation era, digital skills are an indispensable part of every employee’s skill set. But in reality, surveys show that up to 50 % of employees struggle with basics, including Microsoft Office. That is why Lucie Šafirová, Vanda Binderová and Jakub Hrádek from Generali approached us to help them improve the digital skills of the insurance company employees.
In cooperation with RedButton EDU and Generali’s digital ambassadors we designed a project that aimed to offer employees (self)evaluation tools to access their digital skills but at the same time create effective ways to improve them. The result is an interactive digital tool that simulates the real work environment of the insurance company. Employees solve concrete tasks in apps or tools that they use everyday. If they uncover areas where they lack behind, they immediately start learning new skills. On top of that, the app offers them direct links to relevant courses and training that help them further improve.
The test has two levels. Basic level, that is mandatory for everyone, includes 11 tasks focused on work with Outlook and Teams. Advanced level is primarily intended for managers and focuses on more complex tasks in apps connected to Teams.
“Our solution is built on apps used in real work environment and elements of gamification. It serves to assess employees’ digital skills in the environment they should be familiar with. If that is not the case, they immediately have ways to improve their knowledge or discover new functions. Our goal was to increase the use of established work tools and facilitate everyday work tasks,” says Daniel Antl, one of the project members from Direct People.
We managed to design, develop and implement the solution in two months, working in a team of seven people from Direct People and Generali Česká pojišťovna and also in close cooperation with Luboš Malý from RedButton EDU. It is available to all employees in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. And the qualitative data from digital ambassadors show that the use of digital tools such as Team or One Drive increased by approximately 20 %.
It is obvious that increasing digital literacy is not limited to Generali but is rather a society-wide topic. The growing need to increase work efficiency with AI also shows that this cannot be done without solid IT foundations. That is why other companies are also interested in this tool that we created for Generali, so we are working on solutions for their specific environment.
